What is an Operating System?

An operating system is a software that handles the hardware. It comprises a set of programs that control the physical component’s operation, making it easier for the user to use the computer or other equipment.

In addition, it manages resources offered by the hardware and acts as an intermediary between the computer and its user. And also, it provides an environment where the user can execute programs conveniently and efficiently.

The suffix OS generally recognizes some operating systems’ names, such as MS-DOS, iOS, and macOS. Usually, it is the basic software created by the company that builds the computer.

Types of operating systems

Operating systems vary depending on the hardware and its purpose.

Monoprocessor system

There is a single central processing unit (CPU) in the mono processor system capable of executing a series of general instructions.

Multiprocessor systems

Also called parallel or closely coupled systems, multiprocessor systems have two or more CPUs that share buses and sometimes the clock, memory, and peripheral devices. There are two types:

  • asymmetric multiprocessor: Each processor has a specific task.
  • Symmetric multiprocessor: All processors perform the same tasks.

Distributed systems

A distributed system features a collection of processors that do not share memory or clock. And also, communicate over an interconnected network.

Laptop operating systems

In this case, handheld laptops refer to those small devices that can be manipulated with one hand, such as tablets, smartphones, and notebooks. Additionally, the telephone operating systems must add components for communications and the interface.

Embedded or real-time operating systems

Embedded or real-time systems are operating systems installed in medical devices, electronics, household appliances, and automobiles. Furthermore, they are responsible for specific tasks of the equipment in question such as:

  • save battery power;
  • adjust to limited times;
  • does not require human supervision.

Multimedia systems

Multimedia systems are designed to handle multimedia data files: audio and video data files, such as MP3s, DVD movies dr strange full movie in hindi download filmymeet, and videos. Furthermore, these files have to be processed at a particular time and at a fixed and continuous speed for efficient delivery.

Multimedia operating systems have to control the compression and decoding of large files, the schedule and priority of delivery, and Internet connection protocols. Furthermore, the use of it is in personal computers, digital assistants, and phones.

Functions

The operating system manages the material resources of the computer:

  • The usage time of the processing unit,
  • Memory space,
  • The data storage space,
  • Input and output devices.

An analogy that will make us understand the operating system’s functions is like the conductor of a symphony orchestra. In himself, the orchestra’s conductor does not play any instrument, but it is he who directs the musicians to enter at the right time.

Management of resources between processes

  • Computer resources include peripheral devices (such as printer and DVD player) and equipment functionality.

Maintaining security

Computer security is a task of the operating system:

Protects computer resources against unauthorized people’s entry. In addition, you can do it by creating accounts for different users.

Establish privileged instructions. And also, control of privilege levels to maintain security against internal attacks.
